If you’re like most people you grew up believing that spirituality and sexuality were things that didn’t quite fit together. In a lot of families, sexuality was just not something discussed especially if you came from a “religious” family. So, many of us grew up believing that sexuality and spirituality are mutually exclusive unless within the confines of very specific circumstances like marriage and even then only for the purpose of procreation, not for the pleasure inherent in sexuality itself.
This kind of programming from our families, teachers and religious leaders has stuck with many of us so that even though we are adults and perhaps even married, we still feel guilty about sex as something dirty and shameful.
Many people, maybe even you, are unable to have healthy sex lives because you secretly carry feelings of shame. Perhaps you are a spiritual person and you feel conflicted because you somehow received the message early on that sex is bad, God is good and so the two can never go together.
Maybe this belief is affecting your ability to have or maintain long term relationships. If you are experiencing guilt, shame or internal conflict in any one area of life, believe me, it will spill over into other areas of your life. At the core of guilt and shame is a belief that you are unworthy or inadequate. Your relationship partners will feel this too and sooner or later the relationship will dissolve under the weight of those bad feelings leaving you to once again be alone and wondering what went wrong.
This does not have to be your scenario. Sexuality and spirituality are not mutually exclusive and you can be empowered with new knowledge that affirms your goodness and reignites the power latent within you as a spiritual being.

About Your Facilitator
Your facilitator is Darnise C. Martin, PhD, a spiritual student and teacher for over 20 years. Finally following the spiritual calling upon her life in 1994, she left her previous career to pursue formal theological training. She now holds a PhD from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, and is on the faculty in African-American Studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Shaped by her advanced studies in Christian History, Myth and Religion and New Thought philosophy Darnise has fashioned her life’s work to focus on questions of ultimate meaning. She asks how religion helps us make sense of our lives as human beings. She is an author, educator and spiritual director offering spiritual life makeovers to empower people to live meaningful and successful lives from the inside out. She is the author of Beyond Christianity: African-Americans in a New Thought Church, a case study of African-Americans in New Thought religions.
